In 2001, the most notable crop circle event was the appearance of the "face and disk" formation near the Chilbolton radio telescope in Hampshire, England. This formation, also known as the Chilbolton Code, resembled a response to the 1974 Arecibo message, containing a coded message and a depiction of a humanoid face with a large head. The Milk Hill formation, one of the largest ever recorded with 409 circles, also appeared in Wiltshire that year.

The Arecibo message is an interstellar radio message carrying basic information about humanity and Earth that was sent to the globular cluster Messier 13 in 1974. It was meant as a demonstration of human technological achievement, rather than a real attempt to enter into a conversation with extraterrestrials.
