The day started off as a typical Monday morning here in my neighborhood of Bay Ridge Brooklyn. The sun was shining - the weather mild for February. That would be short lived as it became a day of sirens and a police chase through Brooklyn ending at the entrance to the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel after a one hour crime spree. Though I'm usually out and about on a Monday morning this particular day - following Super Bowl LVII - I chose to stay home and work from there.

The first incident occurred three blocks from here around 10am when police boxed in a pick up-truck and arrested the driver witnessed by neighbors and my mail lady who described the incident to me. You would think that would be enough for Bay Ridge, but somewhere 'crazy' must've kicked in.

At 10:50am 62 year old Weng Sor - an ex-con who suffers from mental illness - went on a violent rampage in a U-Haul truck. It started on Bay Ridge Parkway and 5th Avenue not far from here. I live on 4th Avenue and 101 Street. Videos show people diving for safety as he drove onto the curb with police officers in hot pursuit. Another video shows police getting students from Bay Ridge Prep School off the streets as they screamed and ran for cover.

Police pursued Sor through seven different Brooklyn neighborhoods as if a chase scene from one of the TV crime shows that are often filmed here. In the end, one victim - a 44-year-old man, died - and eight others were injured, including a police officer. NBC Coverage

Though the stereotype about mass shootings often references young mentally ill white males - that is changing. This is the second incident in 2023 of senior age Asians going on a rampage. As day turned to night - over at Michigan State University chaos continued when a mass shooting school took place. Three students were killed, and five others were injured. The gunman was identified as a Black male - 43-year-old Anthony Dwayne McRae who died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound when he was confronted by police off campus. 2023 Michigan State University Shooting.

There are endless reasons this is occurring - but containing the situation is not going to happen as reality reaches its breaking point and ends.
