Americans have always fought for freedom and democracy so each generation that followed would have an increasingly better life.
Called the American Experiment I'm sure the founding fathers knew that at some point events would change along with the times. For better or worse it was inevitable. This year it's difficult for many to get into the holiday spirit which celebrates the foundation of US democracy as it flounders on the precipice of destruction.
On July 4, 1776, a small American battery of soldiers - the Narrows Fort on the site of today's Fort Hamilton - fired into one of the British men-of-war convoying troops to suppress the American Revolution. Fort Hamilton was officially named for the former Senior Officer of the United States Army and first Secretary of the Treasury, Alexander Hamilton, in the twentieth century.

There's nothing like July 4 at Coney Island where I lived until age 11. It's like a Mini Disney World with rides, games, entertainment, interesting food, sports, an iceskating rink, and a boardwalk and beach running alongside the Atlantic coastline in Brooklyn, New York.
