Terry Gene Bollea - Hulk Hogan
(August 11, 1953 - July 24, 2025)
I first heard the news when I returned home after the sailboat regatta - and turned the TV on to TMZ. There was host Harvey Levin at his computer in the media newsroom reporting live on this developing story while sharing pics and videos. Harvey, clearly upset, showed personal clips of time spent with his friend Terry talking about his life and times.
Though not a fan of wrestling I was aware of the ups and downs of Hulk Hogan's life - most recently his support of, and friendship with, Donald Trump.
He will be remembered as a legendary figure in professional wrestling, known for his charisma and larger-than-life persona. He inspired countless fans around the world with his catchphrases and signature moves. Beyond the ring, he was a beloved icon who brought entertainment and joy to many, leaving a lasting legacy in sports and pop culture.
Hogan gained fame in the 1980s as the face of the WWF (now WWE) and became a cultural icon, known for his distinctive mustache, bandana, and red and yellow attire. Hogan's charisma and ability to connect with audiences helped popularize professional wrestling during its boom period. He headlined numerous WrestleMania events, including the first-ever WrestleMania in 1985, where he teamed up with Mr. T to take on Paul Orndorff and Roddy Piper. Hogan's signature moves, such as the "leg drop" and his finishing move, the "Hulkster," became legendary in the wrestling world.
Beyond wrestling, Hogan appeared in movies and television shows, contributing to his status as a pop culture icon. He starred in the reality TV show "Hogan Knows Best," which showcased his family life and further endeared him to fans.
Throughout his career, Hogan has faced various challenges, including personal and legal issues, but his impact on the wrestling industry remains significant. He is often credited with helping to bring wrestling into the mainstream and inspiring a new generation of wrestlers. Hogan's legacy continues to be celebrated by fans worldwide. His contributions to wrestling and his impact on fans will be remembered fondly.
