On June 30, 1947, a student pilot named Lieutenant William G. McGinty was flying toward Williams Field Air Force Base when he witnessed two light-gray, circular objects about eight feet in diameter. The objects were descending vertically at "inconceivable speeds" directly over the Grand Canyon, roughly 25 miles south of the South Rim.
