Scientists Destroy COVID And Flu Viruses in The Lab With Sound Waves   Science Alert - May 11, 2026

Sound waves already used in medical scans may have a surprising new target: viruses. In lab experiments, scientists have demonstrated how ultrasound blasts can break down influenza A (H1N1) and SARS-CoV-2, which causes COVID-19. Microscopic vibrations caused by ultrasound waves are sufficient to rupture the membranes surrounding their viral particles, experiments showed, rendering the viruses inactive.

Treating pain in the brain isn't easy - what with it being essential for everything we think and do - but a newly developed, non-invasive method of using ultrasound is showing particular promise. Researchers from the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine used tightly focused beams of ultrasound, aimed at one particular part of the brain, to reduce the perception of pain and some of its related effects (such as heart rate changes). While this approach is still in the early stages, the team is hopeful that it can be developed further as a way of manipulating the brain and soothing our bodies, especially for those experiencing chronic pain.
